Android Tablets

Android is a tablet operating system that was developed by Google. It is a system based on the linux operating system and is marketed as open source software.

The Android operating system is primarily used in mobile devices like phones and tablets. It is not an expensive software and is used to power some of the more high profile phones such as the Nexus phone from Google, the Samsung Galaxy series from Samsung as well as those from other major players in the cell phone business including HTC, ZTE, and Sony among others.

Customized tablets based on Android like the Kindle Fire and the Nook are used by Amazon and Barnes and Noble to consume content they provide. Amazon does have a very well respected content base in their Amazon Prime service which includes ebooks, movies and music.

What do you need to know before purchasing an android tablet?

Well one thing that is somewhat interesting is their names. Since 2009, each release has had a confectionary theme, starting with Cupcake and ending with KitKat, (Though L is supposed to be available for the Nexus brand products very soon).

One important thing to note about the different versions is that they are not compatible on all android devices. There is a wide range of hardware in the market place and they will not all be compatible or offered the newest operating system.

There are several questions you need to ask when considering a tablet, but the best place to start is with your individual needs.

  • Will you be gaming with your tablet?
  • Do you need to carry it around for work?
  • What features do you need? (Word processing, camera, 4g or Wi-Fi?)

Tablets are somewhat like Android phones, there are many units in the marketplace from various manufacturers and they do not all function the same. For instance, if you are going to use your tablet for gaming then processor speeds and display are going to be very important. On the other hand, if you are using it to work on presentations or taking it with you everywhere you go, you want the best connectivity and storage space. All of this will vary from one android tablet to the next.

Your best bet is to first know exactly what you need, so you will be better able to compare devices.
